Is it true that workers can spit in your food at fast food restaurants?

I have recently discovered that this can happen and I used to love takeaways but now I have been rather put off by knowing that people can just spit in my food if they want to. In fact one time I could swear I ate spit as it was all slimy and I felt ill. It was sickening. How often does this happen?
